The Miami International Film Festival Sponsors Special Presentation of Documentary about Cuban Singer/Songwriter Carlos Varela. Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Miami International Film Festival (MiamiFF) will sponsor a special presentation of Canadian filmmaker Ron Chapman’s The Poet of Havana, a documentary about Cuban singer/songwriter Carlos Varela, at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at the Tower Theater in the heart of Little Havana.
The director and the artist, whose most prominent songs include Foto de familia (Family Photo) and Guillermo Tell, will attend the screening at the Tower Theater.
The Poet of Havana tells the story of the controversial artist’s ups and downs, and of his achievements. Even with thousands of followers, he has been banned by the island’s media more often than not. The documentary shows footage of two concerts Varela gave in 2013 with internationally-renowned stars at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba (National Theater of Cuba), where he celebrated his 30th anniversary as an artist.
Ivan Lins, Jackson Browne, Luis Enrique, Eduardo Cabra, Juan Formell, Diana Fuentes and José Luis Cortés were some of the artists who joined Varela for his anniversary concert. Snippets of his songs alternate with a chronological interview on Varela’s life, as well as interviews with other figures who admire both his art and his strength for facing the challenges brought about by being censored in his own country. Varela has emerged in the end as one of the most powerful voices of his generation, which has experienced defining events such as the Mariel boatlift and the fall of the Berlin Wall in the 1980s, and the balsero crisis in the 1990s.
This event precedes Varela’s scheduled concert in Miami on May 8 at The Flamingo Bar and Theater of The Four Ambassadors.
